Trekking on Lake Garda – From the Shoreline to the Mountain Summit

Around Campione del Garda stretches a network of hiking trails with something for everyone. Families find short, safe outings. Experienced hikers climb peaks over 2,000 metres. The combination of Mediterranean climate, olive groves, lemon gardens and alpine limestone ridges makes hiking here an experience found nowhere else in the Alps.

Easy Walks – Ideal for Families and Beginners

Cascata di Campione (10–15 minutes): A well-marked path leads in just a few minutes to one of the most beautiful waterfalls on Lake Garda. The water tumbles from a rock face into a natural pool — refreshing on hot days. Suitable for children from about five years old.

Lakeshore path: The flat path along the water connects Campione with neighbouring villages, offering continuous lake views. No significant elevation change — perfect for a morning stroll or evening walk.

Moderate Hikes – Nature and History

Cima Comer (1,280 m – 3 to 4 hours): Around 600 metres of elevation gain to a summit with a 360-degree panorama over Lake Garda and the Bergamo Alps. Well marked with CAI signs, technically straightforward but requires good fitness and solid footwear.

Sentiero delle Ere – Tignale (2 to 3 hours): Through centuries-old olive groves and past the Madonna di Monte Castello sanctuary perched on a rocky spur high above the lake — one of the most impressive viewpoints on the western shore.

Via dei Contrabbandieri (Smugglers' Path): Once used to transport goods across the border between the Kingdom of Sardinia and the Habsburg Empire — today a historically rich trail with explanatory panels and spectacular views.

Challenging Hikes for Experienced Walkers

Monte Baldo (2,218 m): One of the botanically richest massifs in the Alps — called the "Hortus Europae" by botanists. The summit offers an unmatched view of the entire lake. The Malcesine cable car reaches the top station for those who prefer a shorter final ascent.

Alta Via del Garda: A multi-day long-distance trail traversing the entire western shore on the ridge lines — new panoramas every day, authentic mountain huts, and the constant presence of both lake and high mountains.

Equipment and Important Tips

  • Hiking boots: Recommended even on moderate trails — limestone paths can be slippery
  • Water: At least 1.5 litres per person, especially in summer — springs are rare
  • Sun protection: Hat, high SPF sunscreen, sunglasses — rock reflects strongly
  • Start early: Especially in summer on exposed trails
  • Weather: Thunderstorms can build quickly in the mountains in the afternoon
